Update and Ebooks

Posted: October 31, 2012 in LCHF/Paleo

So just thought I’d come on and give you an update on how I’m doing in the past week since my Naturopath appointment.

I have seen so much of a difference in how I feel this week, it really is unbelievable. I’m sleeping better, I’m not as tired(my energy is going up every day) my skin is the clearest it has ever been.  Literally I haven’t EVER had such clear skin! Best of all I’m dropping almost a pound a day the past few days. I know that won’t last forever but it’s still nice to see. I’m down 5 lbs this past week. Considering the first few days doing this were rough and I ate some cookie dough(LOL) and a couple of cookies, (oops). The pounds actually have only come off the past couple days.

I’m hoping this means my body is adjusting to burning fat as energy(ketosis) and not the carbs. I’m really not eating much carbs at all so it is likely my body is making the switch over. I’ll be so happy to get back down to what I was even after the baby, which I was only up 5 lbs after have the baby. Then I started eating lots of carbs, gluten, sugar and bam in a couple of months I was up 20 lbs. Didn’t take long!

I would have thought that I’d hate eating NO CARBS at all but since I can eat lots of fat, the food I’m eating (VEGGIES, MEAT and FAT) are pretty tasty. I fried spinach the other day in some butter and garlic and ate it with my chicken and yum it was pretty good. I also made some soups(Spicy Pumpkin Soup) and (Creamy Tomato Soup) which are a nice break from the everyday salads.

I find it hard when I want to snack, cause who really wants to snack on veggies… but it’s something I’ll have to get use to. Right now, no carbs! This is probably going to last a long time and I’ll slowly start adding a bit of fruit back into my meals later down the road. I am talking some berries of , nothing too extreme. Once I start eating sugar again everyday the Candida (yeast) will start coming back and I’ll have to start all over again with that. It’s really just easier to stay away from large portions of sugar. Though I’m ok with the odd treat once in a while, I doubt it would hurt me doing it once in a while. That is in my future though, not the present. Right now, very little carbs!

I also would like to mention a sale on ebooks(not mine) but they are all fairly paleo/primal ebooks. I bought the bundle and you get over 30 ebooks for 30 bucks! Less than a dollar an ebook! It’s worth it for me just for recipes! I love recipes, you should see the recipe books I’ve created, I have probably thousands of paleo recipes in my recipe books! I have no excuse :) Anyways the ebooks are from lots of different paleo/primal bloggers and I just started reading through them and they’re really good! So if you are into ebooks and want to get them, check it out!

So as you heard in my last post I paid a visit to the Naturopath earlier in the week. She put me on a very strict diet limiting me of all the foods I had an intolerance to, along with yeast free foods. She put me on a Candida Purge and upped my magnesium intake.

When I got home I looked over all the foods that I am supposed to avoid and it’s basically following a Paleo Diet. Before I was eating paleo but was still eating way too many fruits and foods with sugar such as bacon, tomato sauce that had a bit of sugar, I was still eating lots of cheese. The paleo diet you are eating very little fruit, mostly berries because they are lower in sugar, you don’t eat bacon or processed meats and you don’t eat dairy, so bye bye to butter, cheeses, cream.

What am I left with? Lots of veggies, meat, nuts/Seeds, Fats, coconut milk and the odd berry… Ok so this is very Paleo and I think what I was eating before was still very healthy but since I have an intolerance to sugar, MSG, Chocolate, Lactose, Gluten, Rice and Corn. I was still eating some foods that bothered me and didn’t know it.

How have I been doing? Well actually really well till yesterday when I made some cookies for my boyfriend and ate some cookie dough. Yeah I know, oops. But other than that I have done really well. And I have felt MUCH better, my energy is slowly coming back, my headaches are gone. The problem I’ve had though is that even though I was upping my magnesium intake every day, I was still having muscle cramps and achy muscles. I’m at my limit on how much magnesium a day I can take, so I looked up to see what else could be causing the cramps. I found that when you eat Paleo, very low carbs you lose a lot of nutrients from your body. It’s like a diuretic, you purge all the toxins out of the body along with nutrients. So you kind of have to add them back in. I know I’m eating very good but something I was missing that I didn’t realize was potassium.

I was drinking coconut water before and it has quite a bit of potassium, but I had stopped because it also has carbs and I’m trying to avoid sugar like the plague right now. I didn’t want to eat a banana because again it’s a fruit that’s higher in sugar. Right now I’m sticking to a glass of coconut water a day until my body is working better. I might have to find some supplements in the future but for now, it really helps. I was getting cramps in my legs before I even feel asleep last night so I drank some coconut water and they went away and I finally went to sleep.

Onward to more sugarless days(yes I’m addicted to the one food I’m most intolerant to). But you know what, we are all addicted to sugar, it’s not just me. Sugar (next to gluten) is the worst food you can consume because it feeds so many bad things in your body like bacteria, yeast, cancer. Seriously not worth eating.

Once I get more energy back I’ll start trying to get some exercise into my day. Up until the past few days I felt like napping ALL THE TIME. So now that it’s getting better I get WAY more done in the day. It’s kind of nice. Especially now that I know I’m going back to work in a few days, I’ll need all the extra time to do things in the day that I can get!

My visit to the Naturopath

Posted: October 24, 2012 in LCHF/Paleo

I have wanted to go see a Naturopath for years but never took the time to go. I was hoping it would confirm all my suspicions on food intolerance and maybe give me an idea on what else I should be looking at as a sensitivity. That’s pretty much what it did.

I was a skeptic when it comes to how they figure out what food you are sensitive to, I figured that they ask you tons of questions so they know ahead of the testing what you are sensitive to and put that on the results. Now I have to admit I did tell her a few of the foods I thought I had an intolerance to but not all of them. They all showed up on the test and a couple of surprises that totally make sense now that I think about it.

I looked up the testing method online and apparently it’s just as accurate as blood testing. I can’t see how they could fake it because it’s based on results on a meter. The meter reaches around 70 and you are good to go, if it goes to 40 or below then you’ve got problems with that particular food.

She starts with Meat Fruits, Fish, Eggs, veggies and works her way into Grains, sugars, Dairy, Beverages and Misc. I knew for a fact I would have trouble with grains. Wheat flour, Rye, Barley, Oatmeal and Baker’s Yeast all were around 30. Rice and Corn were both 40, Cola, Beer, Red and white wine were 30, MSG and Chocolate were 30, Sugar(refined) was 20 and Lactose was 30.

That pretty much sums up all the problems I’ve had. I had figured out the Gluten. The rice and corn I just recently cut out. I figured red wine bothered me because it always gave me a headache. I’ve avoided it and now it seems that white wine sometimes gives me a headache as well. The dark chocolate lately when I’ve eaten it, I’ve gotten a headache. Wasn’t sure if it was a coincidence or not, so I’ve avoided it. Now I know. The lactose I had an idea. I always buy lactose free milk because I was never 100% sure and it was just easier. The sugar I suspected bothered me too but had no idea I was that intolerant to it. The one I had no clue about was the MSG. I had problems with some foods but could never put a finger on why exactly they would upset my stomach. I never really researched MSG and had no clue what foods had MSG in it. Reading the list of foods, it makes sense. A lot of those foods I have noticed issues with.

I also had an organ assessment done. To make sure all my organs were functioning properly and didn’t have any inflammation. I was worried that I had problems maybe with my liver or kidneys after taking medication to cure infections. Some medicine just made things WAY worse. Since some LONG stints on various meds, I’ve had tons of other problems so I thought maybe it was an organ that was not working properly because of those drugs.

Thankfully all my organs are doing pretty good. The only problems that showed up was with my lower bowel (not a shocker when you eat foods that bother you) Lymphatic System again didn’t really shock me because I have felt off the past few weeks. My body is probably fighting off something. It is cold season after all. And my thyroid again didn’t surprise me.

Turns out though that I’m doing many things right, I have cut out a lot of foods that I had figured out bothered me already. She actually thought I had seen a naturopath before because I had gotten a bit figured out on my own. I have taken Probiotics, Cod Liver oil, Magnesium and Digestive enzymes to help heal my gut and get some minerals into my body that I know it needs. She boosted up my magnesium intake. Apparently everyone needs quite a bit of magnesium, she told me to take as much as my body can tolerate, obviously I wasn’t taking enough. Which is likely why I was having stiff/sore muscles all the time. She also put me on a Candida Purge to kill off bacteria in my body that is causing me other problems. Again made sense. I was actually going to talk to my doctor about that very thing at my next visit. Though I find doctors really don’t do much other than give you more medication, which is the cause of most of my problems. Everything else she kept the same.

All in all it was worth the visit to her. I think I was getting sick of trying to figure it all out. I was always left feeling like I was missing something. I still wasn’t feeling 100% even though I’m eating whole foods, I’ve cut out all processed foods, most sugars other than a bit of fruit and I’m still not feeling as good as I have in the past. All that’s left is to follow her directions and see how it helps. I have no doubt it will because she said exactly what I was suspecting all along. Problem is, it’s VERY restrictive to cut out all these things from my diet. Apparently I haven’t cut out enough and maybe indulge in sugar way too often. It is very addictive after all. It also is obvious I have a problem with Candida because when I cut out too much sugar I go into what they call a carb flu but is really a Candida Die Off. You basically feel awful and I just haven’t been able to do it. My headache is unbearable and I have very little energy, which with a 9 month old is really difficult to deal with. I just haven’t been able to make it past this Die Off.

Anyways the purge I’m doing will help with that, make it easier hopefully and I am hoping I will feel better soon so I can have my energy back and get more done in a day. Not feel like I need to sleep all the time. I’ll keep you posted on how I’m doing.

Getting over carbs

Posted: October 4, 2012 in LCHF/Paleo, LCHF/Paleo Recipes

Usually when I haven’t posted for a while, it would mean that I’m not doing so well with my eating. Or I’m pregnant. Neither is true and I’ve actually been doing pretty good. I’ve gone without gluten for 3 weeks now and I have not eaten anything processed for almost 2 weeks. I’ve cooked pretty much everything I’ve eaten, next to a meal at the in-laws.

I feel pretty good. I know I am still healing and it will take a while to feel 100% but I’m feeling much better. I have more energy, I sleep better, I have gotten rid of most of my acne, though I really didn’t have much, just bumps under the skin,  I guess it was more like psoriasis or something but it’s mostly gone.

Right now I am eating quite a bit of fruit so I am still eating more carbs than I’d like, but I also have a daughter who is learning to eat solid foods and I end up eating her leftover fruit. Or I buy a whole fruit to mix for baby food and there’s only so much of a cantaloupe a baby will eat. So I have been trying to help eat them up.

It’s great that I am getting lots of nutrition from a variety of foods and I am actually really enjoying making new foods and discovering new tastes I’ve never had, new spices I’ve never tried. The food is super easy to make and tastes much better than anything I’ve had that is packaged or processed.

I would love one day, when I’m back at work or when I actually have some money, to buy a food processor and food dehydrator. I spend tons of time in the kitchen and I would rather not spend so much time chopping things. I also would love more options for snack foods to take with me and I think dried foods would be incredibly handy, especially when my little one is older and taking a lunch to school.

The dried foods you get in the store(dried fruits) are loaded with sugar and just not an option.

Last week I also had a good week for working out but this week has been a bust. I just haven’t had the time. I have also found a great Pumpkin Smoothie Recipe, it’s very yummy and I’ll be trying other recipes with Pumpkin (Muffin and pancakes) shortly.

Here’s the Smoothie Recipe if you’d like to give it a try.

Spicy Pumpkin Smoothie

1 Cup Coconut Milk ( I used So delicious Coconut Milk)

1/2 Cup Canned Pumpkin

1/2 Banana (I used a whole one though)

1 tbsp of Raisins or 1/2 100% Pure Maple Syrup
